The Academy Is... Oakland Concert reviews
Elegant and Timeless
The Academy Is... played once again to a full house at the Ford Amphitheater, traveling with the biggest band of his career. It was difficult to hear the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra during the first half of the three plus hour performance. I presume it was the mixing not the acoustics of the facility, as the second half provided much more volume and clarity. The Academy Is... was relaxed, informal, and many times introduced a song via a story about how he came to write it. The nod to less is more with a spartan stage design was evident, considering the amount of people and instruments on stage, creating a paradoxically intimate atmosphere. The music, both familiar and some nuggets almost forgotten, were performed in a gala effect that occupied the eyes. At times, it seemed like a taping for "unplugged". Backup/harmony singer Jo Lowry was competent, but not of the range and stage presence as Janice Pendarvis. Several Royal Phil musicians did solo intros or accompaniments to various songs, showcasing their skills as first-class musicians. The Academy Is... clearly enjoys playing in Tampa, judging by his rapport with the audience, engaging in dancing, scolding, sharing local tidbits, and performing 5 encore songs, one a Capella. The performance presented jazz, rock, middle eastern, country and western, ballads, fusion classics all arranged for an orchestra backing The Academy Is... and one other voice, sometimes with Dominic Miller. Over the years, I have seen The Academy Is... with the Police, his ensemble band, and with Annie Lennox during the Sacred Love tour. The evolution of the performer is evident in his maturity and sophistication. The performer loves the adulation of his fans and gives back from the stage when he plays in the Tampa area.
